What is Apprenticeship?
- Apprenticeship is a training method that combines supervised, structured on-the-job training with related theoretical and practical instruction.
- Training that is sponsored by employers or labor management groups that have the ability to employ and train in a work environment.
- Apprenticeship is a training method that prepares people for skilled trades’ employment by supervising training. The content of this training, both on-the-job, and related instruction, is defined and dictated by the needs of the industry, which refers to all types of business workplace settings.
- Apprenticeship is a training method that pays wages to its participants at least during the on-the-job training phase of their apprenticeship and which increases these wages throughout the duration of the training program in accordance with a predefined wage progression scale.
- Apprenticeship is a training method that involves a written agreement and obligation between the program’s sponsor and the apprentice. The written agreement, which is signed by both the apprentice and the program sponsor. The obligation gives employers or program sponsors the right to expect to employ the apprentices upon completion of training given the investment in training and gives the apprentice a reasonable right to expect such employment.
- Apprentices attend school in the fields of HVAC&R, Pipefitting, and Plumbing during the evening, two nights a week from September to May.
- Apprentices work at their chosen trade during the day and get paid while doing it. Working and learning alongside Journeymen performing Plumbing, Pipefitting or HVAC&R related tasks.

Applications for Apprenticeship
The current wage for Helpers is $14.25 an hour, including Health Insurance for yourself. To apply as a Helper/Unindentured Apprentice you must apply in person and bring with you the credentials and items listed below, to speed things up click on the helper application and fill it out ahead of time and come down to the Apprenticeship office; 3630 Belgium Lane San Antonio, Texas 78219. Our Apprenticeship program is for five years. During this time you learn while you are earning a living.
Apprentice Applications will be accepted; Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8 AM - 11:00 AM and 1 PM - 3 PM, only.
You must apply in person. Our address is 3630 Belgium Lane, San Antonio Texas, 78219. When applying for the program you must bring with you the following:
- Minimum of 18 years of age.
- Copy of your Certified Birth Certificate.
- High School Diploma and sealed high school transcript or GED certificate and sealed GED scores, from an accredited institution
- DD-214; if you have been in the military
- Service Report
- Drivers license or Photo ID
- Social Security Card
- Helper Application
- All male applicants under the age of 26 must register for Selective Service or provide proof of ineligibility or prior registration.
- All applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners "Plumbers Apprentice" registration card.
- All HVAC applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation "HVAC Technician Registration" card.
- All Service (HVAC or Plumbing) applicants must have a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Other Items:
- You will be required to get a Texas Plumbing Apprentice card, the cost is $15.00, so please bring a Debit or Credit card when coming to the Hall, this applies to ALL applicants! If you want to apply online click here.
- The Texas Plumbing Board also requires you to have fingerprints done, you can register online at the IdentoGO website, please click here.
- Click Schedule or manage appointment and complete the pages that follow, when asked for an authorization code mark no.
- Do not request a hard card, as it will not be accepted by TSBPE.
- Make sure you bring proof of identification with you to the appointment. (The cost is $39.05)
